Wasps or Hornets?

I was walking down my driveway and just happened to look up into this tree. What on earth is that big huge grey blob?
I had my suspicious, but took out the step ladder anyway to get a closer pic. Ah yes, tiny wasps coming and going - out of that hole at the bottom left side. This must be the month for wasps, as several of my blogging friends have posted about wasps.

The strange thing was, I hadn't noticed that there were any more wasps than usual flying around the yard.

" You got up on our rickety step ladder to photograph a wasp's nest?" asked Hubby.
"Yup."
"That's dangerous!"
"I guess, but I'm o.k. Besides, now you know how I felt when you used to get up on that rickety old thing and trim hedges!"

Think we should get a new ladder?

What lengths, or should I say heights, we can go to, just to get a better look/shot!! The nest looks fascinating but the thought of being stung---OUCH!!!

Sometimes safety goes out of the window when there is a good photo at the end of it.
A new pair of steps would be best though!
Aren't wasps nests beautiful? Pity such horrible creatures live in them though!

I guess wasps have their purpose as it seems that everything does but I'm sure we could live without them too!!
You are brave taking this pic, I hope you didn't get stung!!

Wasp's nest are incredible. This appears to be a Hornet's nest but I do not know for sure. It is very cool. I do KNOW to be respectful of all the wasps.
Perhaps after a good hard and long freeze it would be safe to take it down. Perhaps you will have a new step ladder to do so!
All creatures great and small....
With great respect...

Hi Wendy....I noticed a previous comment said it was a hornets nest....I have hornets in the garden all the time, and have not found them to be a problem.

I must say I think it is a wonderful work of art. All those tiny pieces of wood.....amazing.

Do be careful on the step ladder, I have had many a near miss when I climb mine. Learn by my mistakes......

Hi Wendy, OOPS---I see that big nest. I've never seen one in a tree before like that... (Or maybe I just haven't looked up!!! ha)

We have the same rickity step ladder that you do...I won't get on it. It belonged to my dad---so who knows how old it is...

Hugs,
Betsy

Hi Grammy, Oh, I didn't know the difference. They don't bother me. And I'm not planning to take the nest down. It really is a work of art. Thanks for letting me know it is a hornet nest. It's really big!

Hi Kanak, no I wasn't worried about getting stung. I don't think they felt threatened by me. And didn't even come close to investigate. I did use the zoom lens on my camera. It is an unusual sight, though. And I'm glad I got a pic of it.

Hi Maggie May, yes, we do need a new set of steps. But I just don't think of it unless I'm using this old ladder - and it's not too often. I agree - the hornets or wasps are rather nasty.

Hi Amelia - nope. Did not get stung. That would have made me leave in a hurry!

Hi Sherry, you are right - respect is the key word here. I don't think I will take it down. They are not bothering me, as the nest is up in a tree beside the driveway. And we have a loooong driveway. I just think it's rather beautiful. And (thanks to you and others) I am much more aware of nature's creations.

Hi Cheryl, thank you for the advice. I will be careful. And I agree - it is a beautiful creation of art. Wood? I didn't know it was made of wood. I think I'll google hornet's nest and see what comes up!

Hi Betsy, I've never seen a nest like this either. I thought my ladder was old - yours must be older. LOL! I don't blame you for staying off it.

I'm glad you didn't get in any closer, Wendy! The things we do for a creative blog post:) I was just thinking this yesterday as I was taking photos of a caterpillar in the garden...five years ago, I would have thought someone crazy for taking pictures of a caterpillar or a hornets' nest; now I see them both as a thing of beauty.

Wow! That looks exactly like the one I saw. You have to admire the architecture.

That is 1 serious looking hornet's nest, I have not seen 1 in years. Great pics.

Funny, discovery of wasps leads to realization that new ladder is needed. Thanks for sharing!

I think it's a hornets nest, so watch out! They can be quite aggressive at times. There are paper hornets nest shapes available in the shops, you hang them in a tree and the hornets will not nest near them.
I've been away on vacation so just checking up and catching up on posts. The grandchildren are delightful!

What a fantastic find! And wasps and hornets are great gardeners, they will rid your plants of many pests. I'm glad you are more fascinated than scared. Speaking for myself, as I am scared of heights I'd be more afraid of the ladder :D

Found your blog through Michelle of Rambling woods - I'm glad I did!

Wendy,

My first time here! Your right sort of on both counts. That is a Bald-faced Hornet nest. And even though they are called hornets they are in fact yellow-jacket type wasps. I looked them up last month as we have a nest on the arm of our satellite dish. They stayed about 2 weeks and left for some reason.
