Wildlife on the Lake

This great blue or grey heron is a regular.  Solitary creatures, they stand alone...

I think this one is a loon. I also see him (her?) swimming and fishing alone.

I thought this heron was different than the one in the first pic, but realise it's same guy (or girl) - just a different pose. I thought it's feathers looked a little more ruffly, but it must be because they've dried off in the sun. Wonder why they stand on one leg?

I was flabbergasted to see an egret on the lake!  Since I've only ever seen them in Florida or the Caribbean, I thought they were warm water birds.  However, after consulting Ms. Google, I discovered these "white herons" or egrets are found in lakes all over North America.
This is a lone fisherman as well and I only see it once a week, if that.

Well, here's a little Lady Bug and Brother Bug feeding some Canada geese. I see them (the geese, not the grands) every morning, heads tucked under wings as they rest. Later in the day they fly or swim off to find better fishing grounds, but usually return in the evening.

Well, pardon me for invading your space!

A rare sight. I never thought I'd see a pileated woodpecker outside of the woods. We did see some in our backyard in Hudson, but there are so many wooded areas near my old home, it was not that unusual to see these big birds.
This one, however was in a tree between the road and the lake. I saw him while walking one morning. He's just a kid. Wonder where the nest is?

Twins?  Nope, there were about 5 or 6 of them. It was evening and I surprised these little critters, who were just about to leave the shelter of a bush to cross the road. When they saw big, scary me, they scampered up the nearest tree and stayed there until they thought it was safe.

Awww, now isn't he just the cutest little 'coon you've ever seen?
As long as he stays little and out of trouble......(yeah, right!)

Oh I am ever so impressed with your wildlife!!! The lake looks quite windy and a bit rough; are your summers not warm? LOVE the coons. I know they can be a bit of a pest, but that face!!! **happy smiles** Deb

Hi Wendy, The egret may have got tire of the heat and lack of rain. So He move on. I love the lady bug wings. She is so cute. :)

I also love the racoons. I miss them from our old house. I use to feed them dog food. The would knock on the door and beg. Fun fun fun.

I am so happy to see you have a wonderful place. hugs.

Great set of photos, Wendy.... That little raccoon looks so innocent --but they can cause lots of problems at nights to our bird feeders.... Stinkers!!!! ha

Love the Little Lady Bug... What a cutie... Thanks for sharing all of the great wildlife you have nearby...

When is your next big trip?
Hugs,
Betsy

Great photos, Wendy! Other than the geese and the raccoons, we don't see wildlife like this around here. The herons are so interesting, but my favorite wildlife has to be the ladybugs--so precious!

Wonderful pictures of the wildlife in your area. One would be surprised at what we see here in Brooklyn....squirrels, raccoons, and even a possum.

Oh fun photos, Wendy. The great blue heron is one of my favourite birds and you probably already know how much I dearly love raccoons. The lady bugs.. how very adorable. :) Oh and that's not a loon - it's a cormorant. Fishermen and herons aren't too fond of them as they are piggies when it comes to clearing a lake of fish. Loons, on the other hand are loved by all. At least, I like to think so. ;)

Hi Wendy, Lovely to see all the wildlife, so many lovely creatures, the most precious of course are your delightful little Ladybug and brother :-)

I love Herons and Cormorants and feel a connection with their solitary nature. How lovely to see the egret, the Little Egret has become quite a familiar bird here in recent years but the Great White Egret is still quite scarce and has bred here for the first time this year which is very exciting!

Lovely photos, the ones of the Raccoon made me smile...I thought they were bears at first!!!

Hello Wendy, I love the view of the lake and the wildlife in it. I've never managed a decent picture of a woodpecker and i enjoyed seeing yours. Like Jan, I agree that your grands are the cutest!!:)

Dear Wendy,
I love the way you wove the solitary birds and the social raccoons and geese into
the story of your lake. Sometimes we are alone and sometimes we have family near. You have found a lovely place to "be."
Happy September.
Love and light,
Sherry

What a beautiful collection of birds along with grans and racoon 'cubs', I find the Canada geese to be quite aggressive at times. Noisy too!
Kids seen to love what they are doing.

Nature is a reflection of who we are. As you are able to see through the lens of soul, you do not change the way things are, you change how you see what is. A bird is not simply a bird anymore than you may tell yourself you are simply a human being. Every moment beckons seeing with new eyes.
